Tim Russert and Vampire Weekend . . .

Andrew W. K.
I want to take a moment for Tim Russert. One of the most intelligent Journalist of our time and who seems to be one of the most sincere and caring person. I will miss him this November; I like to call him and Chris Matthews “my boyfriends” for the political season. He is the one person that could get me to open my eyes in the morning when he would explain the primaries on the Today Show. Tim, you had me at “Florida, Florida, Florida”, may you rest in peace.

Well, on a lighter note, this weekend was a wash, literally! So my hopes of seeing a Vampire Weekend FREE show at the Summer Stage in Central Park was not what I expected. I got in line around 12:45ish seeing there was already a good 500 kids lined up. By 1:00 p.m. there were well over a 1,000 people and it was interesting seeing there was no structure to the line up. It went straight back, curved up back around and crossed over, my sister Julie would have had an anxiety attack, and if you know my sister you would agree!

Least I was able to hear the sound check of the Vampire’s and they sounded great and they also did a cover of Tom Petty’s, Love Don’t Come Around Here, which sounded FANTASTIC!

So about 2:00 p.m. the mayhem broke out with the sudden craziness of these kids running as if Godzilla was behind them for no apparent reason, but to our dismay we had to wait an additional 45 minutes as if we were a heard of cattle.

Finally we get in and it was fantastic that we did not have to wait in line for a frosty Coors Light, and to get a decent area to stand. Andrew W.K., such a lovely visionary dressed in his signature white Hanes t-shirt and jeans, welcomed the crowd and got us all pumped for the opening act, Born Ruffians, who hail from Toronto. The few songs were great and if you are a fan of Modest Mouse, I recommend you check them out! Only down side to their performance is when they asked the crowd if we wanted it to rain a little more and of course the genius kids in the crowd all yell “YEAH”, so they did a little rain dance and what happens it rains like if you were driving on 59 in rush hour traffic, you know when you can’t see what lane you are in!

So it starts to slow up and yes Andie MacDowell, “You can’t get any wetter” when soaked. We decided to stay a little longer in hopes that it would stop only to be diappointed with raining even harder.

Needless to say, we left and I ended up running home from Central Park, pulling a Brittany Spears, I can’t run in flip flops, good thing I only live 5 blocks away. I hope to have better luck when I see the Ting Tings next month!
